“With plenty of green space, picturesque views and just a stone throw away from the south coast we are truly delighted to be able to provide new homes for the local community of Saltdean. Once again Inside Out have created a truly incredible design that integrates into the existing surroundings complimenting the South Downs National Park and focusing on important key aspects such as ecology and landscaping.

We are very much looking forward to working on our largest project to date. After an unbelievable amount of hard work and planning and the challenges many have faced during lockdown, we could not be happier to receive this positive outcome for a great start on site.”

Annie Foster Firth
Sales & Marketing Director, Gold Property Developments Ltd

Collaborative working

The development is being delivered by Gold Property Developments in partnership with Man Group, following the success of a previous project worked on together Atelier in Lewes.

The partnership between Man Group and Gold Property is based on a shared vision of creating a sustainable and community-focused development.

Resident is the architectural firm responsible for the design of the development, taking into account the natural landscape and vernacular architecture of the surrounding area. Gold have worked with resident since 2019 on a number of projects.

Idyllic Setting

Coombe Farm is located at the northern end of Saltdean, a Coastal Village within the City of Brighton and Hove.

The development borders farmland as well as the Southdowns National Park to the east, west and north. It lies at the head of a valley named Coombe Bottom.

Gold Property and the local Council placed an emphasis on reducing visual impact of the surrounding National Park, the developments location within a valley and screening from plants has played part in achieving this, large open skies and panoramic views create a dynamic landscape for the scheme.

The development avoids the sprawl of a typical suburban housing estate and focuses on community, placing people above vehicles, with a strong emphasis on public realm.

A considered approach

The housing units have been clustered around home zones or 'Yards' within informal barn-like buildings, suggesting the character of a traditional farmstead. This allows for a large part of the site to be dedicated to a landscaped communal amenity space called 'The Common', which provides new ecological habitats and creates a soft transition between the development, neighbouring suburban housing, and the countryside beyond. The intention is that parents can allow children to explore and play in a natural yet safe environment.
